Tour Plan
Your guide will pick you and take you to visit the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V which are the two most significant sites in the country. Then go on to the Kasbah of the Udayas, a picturesque citadel on the hill top, which has magnificent panoramic views of both the river and the sea. Visit the Chellah, old ruins, in the afternoon, in a walled garden in an idyllic location. Spend the night in Rabat
After breakfast, hit the road north toward Tangier, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean. But first, you will stop at Asilah, a small coastal town that is absolutely charming. Its whitewashed medina is decorated with colourful murals, and the sea walls give you beautiful views of the ocean. It is a great place to walk around, have a coffee, and take some photos.
Then continue to Tangier, a city with a fascinating, multicultural history. It has been shaped by Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Portuguese, Spanish, and French, and you can feel all of that in its streets. Check into your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring Cape Spartel, where the two great seas meet, and the mysterious Caves of Hercules nearby.
Tangier’s medina is also worth a slow wander in the evening, full of life, food smells, and character.
- Driving: approximately 258 km
- Time: approximately 3 hours
After breakfast, drive into the Rif Mountains to reach Chefchaouen, the famous blue city. Arrive, check in to your riad, and spend the afternoon walking through the blue-painted streets of the medina. Browse the local souks, sit in the main square, and enjoy a relaxed evening in one of the nicest towns in Morocco.
- Driving: approximately 112 km
- Time: approximately 2.5 hours
A free day to explore Chefchaouen at your own pace. Visit the old Kasbah in the centre of the medina in the morning. In the afternoon, walk up to the Spanish Mosque on the hill above the town for a beautiful panoramic view, especially stunning at sunset. A great day for photos and slow wandering.
After breakfast, you head south and make a stop at Volubilis, one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. Walking through these 2,000-year-old streets and seeing the intricate floor mosaics still in place is genuinely mind-blowing. It is one of those places that reminds you just how old human history really is.
From Volubilis, you head to Meknes, a grand imperial city from the 17th century. You will visit the huge Bab Mansour gate, one of the most stunning city gates in all of Morocco, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, one of the most important Islamic monuments in the country.
By evening, you arrive in Fes, perhaps the most medieval of all Moroccan cities. Check in to your riad and get some rest. Tomorrow, the medina awaits.
- Driving: approximately 260 km
- Time: approximately 4.5 hours
Spend a full day exploring Fes with a local guide. Start at the Royal Palace gates, then head into the medina. Visit Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, the Al-Attarine Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain, and the famous Chouara Tanneries. Walk through the Jewish quarter, the Mellah, and finish the day at a hilltop viewpoint overlooking the whole city.
After breakfast, head south toward the desert. Stop in Ifrane, a clean mountain town surrounded by cedar forests where you might spot wild Barbary monkeys. Continue through the Ziz Valley with its beautiful palm oases. Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon, ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, then spend the night at a luxury desert camp with dinner and Berber music around the fire. The desert experience is also a core part of our 8-day Morocco itinerary from Rabat for those who want a similar route in fewer days.
- Driving: approximately 500 km
- Time: approximately 7.5 hours (with stops)
Wake up early for sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, explore the Merzouga area. Visit the village of Khamlia to hear traditional Gnawa music performed live. See an abandoned village near old Galena mines and meet a nomadic Berber family near the dunes for tea and a chat. In the afternoon, relax at your riad. Optional quad biking or buggy ride in the evening for sunset views.
Time to leave the desert behind and head into the dramatic landscapes of southern Morocco. Your first stop is Rissani market, one of the most traditional markets in the country, buzzing with locals buying and selling dates, spices, livestock, and handicrafts. It is a very real and lively slice of rural Moroccan life.
Then you drive to Todra Gorge, where towering canyon walls rise up to 300 metres on either side of the narrow Todra River. You can walk along the riverbank at the base of the cliffs, it is dramatic, cool, and incredibly photogenic.
Continuing west through the beautiful Dades Valley, you pass strange rock formations that locals call ‘monkey fingers’, twisted columns of sandstone that look like giant hands reaching out of the earth. Arrive at Dades Gorge in the evening and check into your hotel with views of the valley.
- Driving: approximately 310 km
- Time: approximately 5 hours
Today you drive the famous Road of the Thousand Kasbahs, one of the most scenic roads in all of Morocco. Along the way is Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa because so many famous films have been shot here. Visit Atlas Studios, where sets from Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and The Mummy were built.
Your next stop is Ait Ben Haddou, one of the most famous sites in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient fortified village of mud-brick towers looks like it belongs in another century (because it mostly does). You can climb up through the village, cross the river on stepping stones, and explore the kasbahs at the top for stunning views across the valley.
After lunch, you cross the High Atlas Mountains through the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass (at 2,260 metres) and descend into Marrakech. Arrive in the evening, check into your riad, and take a first stroll around Jemaa el-Fna Square to soak in the energy of the city.
- Driving: approximately 353 km
- Time: approximately 6.5 hours
A full day in Marrakech with a local guide. Visit Jemaa el-Fna Square, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Ben Youssef Madrassa, and the Koutoubia Mosque. In the afternoon, choose between the Majorelle Garden or free time at your riad. End the day with a rooftop drink watching the square light up at sunset.
A short and easy drive today takes you west to Essaouira, a relaxed, artistic coastal town that feels like a complete change of pace from the intensity of Marrakech. The sea breeze, the white-and-blue streets, and the laid-back atmosphere make it one of the most-loved towns in Morocco.
Essaouira’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built inside old Portuguese sea walls. Walk along the ramparts for great views of the Atlantic, explore the art galleries and woodcarving workshops inside the medina, and browse the local market for handmade crafts and jewellery.
The beach here is long and windy (Essaouira is famous as a kitesurfing and windsurfing destination) and perfect for a walk. Enjoy fresh seafood at one of the small grill restaurants near the harbour, just point at what looks good and they will cook it on the spot.
- Driving: approximately 177 km
- Time: approximately 3 hours
Your last full day on the road. After a relaxed breakfast in Essaouira, take one last walk through the medina and along the beach, pick up any last souvenirs, and then hit the road northeast toward Casablanca.
The drive takes you through the flat, agricultural plains of the Atlantic coast, a peaceful ending to a very eventful trip. Enter Casablanca in the afternoon and settle down to your hotel. This evening is yours to spend as you like, you might visit the magnificent Hassan II Mosque (the world’s second-largest mosque and the only one open to non-Muslims in Morocco), walk along the Corniche seafront, or just relax and enjoy a final Moroccan dinner.
